One of my earliest memories of user tech support hell was this.
I was working at a local transport-related company. We had point-of-sales systems spread out across the country, located conveniently at MRT stations. This was the call we got:
User: Hello, IT Dept? The modem here at XXX Station no lights! I turn it on and off many times already, still no lights.
Me: Ok can you check the cable, see if it’s connected…..
User: Aiyah I dunno anything about computers one lah. Quick come over here! Sales booth will open in 30 mins! Faster come!
Me: Sorry, I need to know certain things before I go there, so that I know what to bring
User: I dunno anything about computers! Just bring everything!
Me: That would mean I need to bring the whole workshop over. Just help me abit lah, tell me what I need to know, less than 5 mins I promise!
User: ok ok check what?
Me: Check the power cable, the black colour one. Can see?
User: Yah.
Me: Ok is it connected to the wall power outlet?
User: Oh! *click* now got light leow.
