This is a story related by a colleague when he was with IBM. IBM was a vendor for many large companies and my friend’s job was to provide tech support on behalf on IBM to the customer.
One day he received a call from one of the customers. The user (not an employee of IBM) was complaining that the everything on the CRT monitor is very dim. After patiently running the user through steps to adjust the contrast and brightness on the monitor, the user still complain that everything on screen was very dim. My colleague decide that he has no choice but to go on site to take a look at how dim the screen really is, and whether a replacement will then be necessary.
Upon arriving at user’s desk at the customer’s office, my colleague realised right away what the problem really was after he confirmed the identity of the user.
“Can you please take off your sunglasses?” my colleague said.
It was fortunate he didn’t already bring a replacement monitor along. Even the weight of a 15-inch monitor is no joke.
One needs to ask - Screen dim or user dim?
