I Need Bigger Monitor, No More Space!

This incident happened sometime in 1997 or 1998, I forgot. During those days, 17 inch and 19 inch monitors were a “luxury”. Most of us were still using 14 and 15 inch CRT monitors. Oh yes, during those days, ALL monitors were CRT. LCD monitors weren’t mainstream yet.

One morning we got a call from a user of some importance. She was the regional comms and PR manager so her call was treated with an elevated sense of urgency. She was also of some years, perhaps about late 40s or early 50s.

She said she needed a “bigger monitor” because she had “no more space left to save her files”. We were scratching our heads why she would need a bigger monitor to “save her files”, so we all tromped off to her office.

And because her eyesight, we had originally set her screen resolution to 640x480 on a 19 inch CRT monitor because she was complaining that the words were too small if we were to set it to 1024x768.

When we arrived, she pointed to the monitor for us to see.

The whole desktop was ABSOLUTELY FILLED to capacity with icons - word documents, excel files, PDF files etc.

“See? I need a bigger monitor!”

We didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. I set her resolution to 800x600, and viola! More space “magically” appeared.

“Wow you guys are geniuses! Thanks!”

After we left her office, I told the other 2 colleagues - “one day one of you is gonna have to teach her how to use MY DOCUMENTS to save her files”.
